Re: Video chip Vicky capability question

In general, sound tends to be time/latency critical whereas video tends to be bandwidth critical. Video can drop a frame here and there and the impact is not bad except for the framerate purists. If the audio pipeline experiences either underflow or overflow, though, the results can be downright uni...

Re: General Comments

I'm seriously looking at the YM2149 CHIP for my future projects. I heard some incredible bell sounds from this chip and it can be purchased for under $1 in quantity. Just my 2 cents. Dan 2151 does bells pretty well also - check out the OST for Street Fighter II (arcade version) - Dhalsim stage, and...

Re: Video chip Vicky capability question

I don’t want to do a bitmap screen. I’m a sprites and tiles guy all the way! I just wanted to point OP to the Wiki and then got curious about how I interpreted what it said. Me, if I had an artist and a musician working with me, I’d make a side-scrolling shooter like Gradius/R-type but with a fresh ...

Re: Video chip Vicky capability question

Reduced screen area can help, obviously. Anyway, the Wiki entry for Vicky says the bitmap is able to be located at an arbitrary memory location in bank $B0. https://wiki.c256foenix.com/index.php?title=VICKY The bitmap location is stored as 24 bits in 3 8-bit registers. BM_START_ADDY_L = $AF0141 BM_S...

Re: Video chip Vicky capability question

To my understanding, VGA is nothing but a bunch of bytes to write pixels into. It has no HW sprites, no tiles, no hardware scrolling, etc. The one sprite-like function was HW mouse pointer. On Vicky, it would be like using ONLY the bitmap layer. I can’t say how many CPU cycles it would take to write...

Re: General Comments

2612 would be awesome. It must be very similar to 2151 because I found a post on vgmrips where a guy had mass ripped all instruments from all genesis tracks and converted them all to OPM (2151 instrument) format. I never noticed 2612 didn’t need a DAC chip. Makes sense to reduce chip count for consu...

Re: General Comments

Alright then, if I give you the choice: YM2612 or YM2151 + YM3012 Which one would you pick? S Wow, that's quite a choice! I'd personally choose the 2151+3012 combo as it would support all of the AdLib stuff out there anyone wants to draw upon, as well as having a more advanced FM capability as well...

Re: General Comments

ZeroByte, it is difficult to satisfy everybody, but the Foenix has FPGASID, 2 OPL2, CODEC for Capture and Sampling plus the MIDI interface, I don't know what you could possibly want more? But out of curiosity, if you could choose the FM chip you want, what would it be? I am interested. Cheers Stefa...

Re: Q about rev C early adopter system

True but I was thinking a little earlier myself, namely the agi (nagi) engine http://www.agidev.com/. SCUMMVM might be a little much for a first project... That's definitely beyond my capabilities as well. I wonder if anyone in the SCUMMVM dev community would be up to porting it. Not that this is s...

Maybe port some sierra games? They used interpreters and there are open source versions. Should be doable....
A port of SCUMM VM would bring quite a bit of content to the system right away, that's for sure.
